why do mens briefs have a double layer in the front and boys briefs dont?

I am just curious because I am just starting to require mens size briefs. Why do all the mens pairs have a double thickness of material in the front where boys one just have a single layer? (This is the case in the UK anyway) I think i prefer having just the single layer.
